Pillows have been found to be able to hold up to 39 times as much bacteria as a pet food bowl, this makes it especially important that you should make sure that they are clean so that they do not cause you any issues.

How frequently should you replace your pillows?

We, at Bedding Comfort Store, recommend that you should replace your pillows roughly every 1 to 2 years.

Through use, your pillows eventually have a build-up of dirt from daily use and things like, saliva, dead skin, make-up, sweat, dust or even food crumbs if you ever eat in bed. This creates a wonderful breeding ground for bacteria, mould and mildew none of which will give you a healthy night’s sleep.

By getting new, fresh, clean pillows you will greatly improve your quality of sleep and you will find yourself far more comfortable than you were before.

How do you know if you need a new pillow?

There are a few different signs that will let you know when it is time to get a new pillow and these are as follows:

  1. You are consistently waking up with neck pain, shoulder pain or a headache.
  2. Your pillow is no longer sprint to the touch.
  3. Your pillow feels lumpy, hard or stiff to be sleeping on.
  4. Your pillow stays folded in half when it should actually go back into its original shape.
  5. Your pillow has lost its shape and firmness.
  6. Your pillow smells bad.
  7. Your pillow is covered in stains.
  8. You are consistently sneezing throughout this night – this would be because your pillow has taken in too much dust and bacteria.
  9. You are having frequent and recurring breakouts on your face.

How can you make your pillow last?

Invest in long-lasting pillow protectors.

Pillow protectors have been designed simply for protecting your pillow so that it can last longer. A pillow protector acts as an extra barrier between you at the surface ad the filling so that it will be protected from bacteria and will keep its shape longer.

They are also super easy to wash and come in zip-on or pull-on designs so that they are easily removable. You will be able to wash them as frequently as you do your bedding if you like.

Wash your pillows regularly.

The best way to keep your pillows as fresh as you can for as long as you can is to wash them regularly. Not only does this keep them clean but it actually protects from bacteria and dust build-up in the pillows.

The first thing you should do before washing your pillow is to make sure to read the laundry label so that you know exactly how to wash your specific pillow. As a general rule though we recommend a gentle and cool setting as you do not want to be too rough with them as you could damage the fibres.

You should use a mild anti-bacterial detergent as well as it is best for all pillow materials.

The only pillows you should absolutely never put in a washing machine are memory foam pillows for which you should apply dry cleaning techniques for the same results.

After you have washed your pillows you should take extra care to make sure that they are properly dry before putting them back on your bed. The best way to do this could be to use a low setting on your tumble dryer or dry it outside on a warm day.

Can you feel the difference between a luxury and budget or mid-range pillow? You bet! Our luxury pillows are more pliable and nicer to use without a pillowcase. If you sometimes sleep without pillowcases, our Luxury Pillow Pair should be top of your list.

Soft pillow 700g

Our soft luxury pillows are perfect for front sleepers because the pillow will compress almost flat under your weight. These pillows provide minimal support, making them a good choice if you like to sleep without elevation.

Medium pillow 850g

Our medium luxury pillows are perfect for back sleepers because they compress under head weight, but not completely. This means they will conform to your head but keep their rigidity to keep your neck and spine aligned.

Firm pillow 1,000g

Our firm luxury pillows are perfect for back sleepers because they maintain their shape no matter what. You can place your body weight on them, and they will compress very little, so this is the best choice if you need elevation.
