What Is a Cot Mattress?

What Is a Cot Mattress

Are you expecting a brand new bundle of joy, or do you know someone who is?

Then you are probably knee-deep in research into what kind of baby equipment you need to prepare for the little one’s arrival.

You may be wondering what the answer is to the question ‘what is a cot mattress?’

We will outline everything you need to know in this article.

What is a cot mattress?

A cot mattress is a small mattress which goes inside your baby’s cot, to create a comfortable sleeping environment for them.

The cot mattress should be comfortable, breathable and hypoallergenic, to ensure the baby sleeps safely and peacefully. It should also be firm, waterproof and in good condition- as this can help prevent Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).

What size is a standard cot mattress? Are all cot mattresses the same size?

The size of the cot mattress may vary, depending on where you buy it. As a general rule of thumb, cot mattresses are usually 70cm wide by 140cm long.

At what age can a baby sleep on a cot mattress?

A baby cot mattress is usually suitable from birth, up until about 2 years old.

When your child is a toddler, they may transition from a cot to a toddler bed. When this happens, you should switch the cot mattress out for a toddler mattress.

A tell-tale sign that your child is ready to transition to a toddler bed is if they stand up in the cot and try to crawl out of it!

Once your baby can stand up by themselves, keep an extra eye on them, because they may want to explore the cot and crawl out of it, which can be dangerous.

Do toddler beds need a mattress protector?

All toddlers experience bed-wetting phases, so a mattress protector is a good idea to protect your child’s mattress from accidents, spillages and stains.

Here at Bedding Comfort Store, our Organic Cotton Cot Bed Waterproof Mattress Protector helps add a barrier to your child’s mattress. It protects against fluids which can cause damage and shorten the life of your toddler’s mattress.  With a soft layer of cotton-rich fabric secured with waterproof underlining, our mattress protector will keep your toddler’s mattress stay fresh and clean for longer.

Can a baby sleep on an adult mattress?

No, a baby should not sleep on an adult mattress due to the serious safety risks. An adult mattress can endanger a baby, as they can suffocate on a soft mattress (such as memory foam or a water bed) or from soft furnishings such as quilts and heavy-duty pillows.

The baby can also become trapped or wedged between a mattress and headboard or wall, or be at risk of strangulation from dangling cords on a bed frame.

Does a baby need pillows, blankets, or a duvet?

No, a child under 12 months old should never be given a thick blanket, duvet, or heavy-duty pillows, as these put the baby at risk of overheating and suffocation.

Read our blog post here to find out when to put a duvet and pillow in a cot.

How can I keep my baby safe when he/she is sleeping in their cot?

A baby can be put at risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) if their sleeping arrangements are not considered safe. You should always take care to make sure your baby’s cot is safe and comfortable throughout the long stretches that the baby is asleep.

Follow these tips below to keep your baby safe when they are sleeping in their cot:

  • The baby should sleep on their own sleep surface in the same room as you, for at least the first six months.
  • Do not place a thick blanket or duvet over the baby, as this could cause them to overheat. Quilts, duvets and thick blankets should not be used for children under 12 months old.
  • Remove toys from the cot, such as stuffed toys.
  • Remove overhanging mobiles with loose strings, as these put the baby at risk of strangulation.
  • Choose a good cot mattress, which is hypoallergenic, lightweight, and comfortable for the baby.
  • Check that the cot mattress does not present any dangers- e.g. the zip could fall off and become a choking hazard
  • For the first 6 months, always put the baby to sleep flat on their back on a firm mattress, and put them on their back again if they roll over.

Place the baby in the ‘feet to foot’ position, with their feet at the end of the cot or Moses basket.

  • Keep the baby’s head uncovered while they sleep- remove any hats or hoods.
  • Make sure the room temperature is not too warm or too cold for the baby.
  • Always check the baby’s temperature by feeling its stomach or the back of its neck, to see if they are too hot or too cold.
  • Keep your baby’s cot out of direct sunlight. Put blackout curtains in the baby’s room if you prefer.
  • Keep the baby’s cot away from cigarette smoke.
  • Playing sounds from a white noise machine or white noise app may help settle the baby to sleep.
  • Don’t share a bed with your newborn baby.
  • If you use a baby carrier or car seat, use these safely.
  • If you are using a second-hand cot, baby carrier or car seat, check that these are working properly and are not damaged, which could be dangerous for your baby.
  • Don’t fall asleep with a baby on your chest.

Are weighted blankets dangerous for a baby?

Yes. A weighted blanket is not safe to use for your baby.

As your baby grows, you may be tempted to buy a bigger blanket to keep them warm.

However, weighted blankets apply pressure on the baby’s chest, so they can become crushed under the bulk and weight of the blanket, which can be fatal.
