No matter what size your bed or pillows are, it always looks beautiful if you rest your sleeping pillows vertically against the headboard, and add one or two smaller, accent pillows (or throw pillows) in the middle.
If you are a minimalist when it comes to bedroom décor, you probably won’t want dozens of pillows clogging up your space. Instead, simply lean your sleeping pillows against your headboard and add a smaller accent pillow (or throw pillow) in the middle, for a crisp, neat look. The accent pillow can add a pop of colour to your bed, so you can play with different shades and prints if you wish, or you can stick to a more cohesive colour theme.
If you enjoy creating a decorative space in your bed, then why not add a trendy bolster pillow alongside your sleeping pillows and accent pillow? Not only does a bolster pillow look stylish, but they are super practical – you can tuck it between your legs or place it by your shoulder for extra support during sleep.
If your headboard is large (measuring around 2 feet high, or more), then you definitely have the space to prop up a few extra pillows for decoration. Choose neutral, matching colours which don’t clash, for a streamlined, luxurious appearance.
When decorating a king-size bed, you may find it useful to choose king-size pillows, with accent pillows on either side and a bolster pillow in the centre.
If you are a side sleeper, you will need firmer pillows, to support your head and neck. Sleeping with 2 pillows is the best option for side sleepers, due to the nature of the vertical shoulder position. But the second pillow is not for your head!
Did you know that using a second pillow between your knees can prevent the leg on top from pulling your spine out of alignment? This also ultimately relieves stress on your lower back and hips.
If you are a back sleeper, one pillow underneath the head and one pillow under the knees is the most optimal position. This will keep the neck aligned in a comfortable way and support the natural curve in your lower back. Orthopaedic pillows are also excellent for people with back pain, as these reduce the pressure on your spine and neck.
Sleeping on your stomach is considered the worst sleeping position, as it strains your back and spine and forces your head to be turned in one direction for a period of time, which causes pain. However, many people are front sleepers, so if this is you, we recommend you use one, thin pillow. The less angled your neck and back are, the better for your overall health.
At Bedding Comfort Store, we recommend replacing your pillows every 1 to 2 years.
Buying fresh, new pillows to replace your old ones will greatly enhance your comfort and quality of sleep.
Over time, there will be a build-up of dirt and germs in your pillow, from daily grime such as dust mites, saliva, your dead skin cells, sweat, oils, makeup and food crumbs.
In fact, getting rid of your old pillows has great health benefits. Did you know that your pillow is the perfect breeding ground for nasty bacteria, mould, mildew and fungi?
American researchers studied the pillows of 50 university students and found that the average pillow had over 100,000 potentially live yeast and mould colonies on the surface, some of which are known to be highly toxic and even fatal.
Even drooling, coughing and sneezing during sleep can transfer viruses onto the pillow. This shows how your pillow could actually be a contaminated surface, which is why it needs to be disinfected regularly, and replaced after no more than 2 years.
If you like cuddling with your furry friend at night, then just know that they will also be bringing its germs into your bed. Your pet can shed hair or dander, transfer infections to you, and even leave traces of fecal mater in your bed- which can transmit parasites and bacteria like E. coli.
Hence, it is super important to clean your pillows and change them regularly, to keep your bedroom germ-free and protect your immune system from harmful pathogens.
