Which Duvet Cover Material Is Best For Summer?

Your duvet cover will make all the difference for a peaceful night’s sleep.

If you opt for a duvet cover which is too thick, with poor airflow, it might cause you to wake up drenched in a pool of sweat. Conversely, a duvet cover which is too thin won’t offer the warmth you need at night, so you might catch a chill from the cold draft.

So, which duvet cover material is best for summer?

In this article, we will outline our recommendations on what type of duvet cover to choose this summer.

Which duvet cover material is best for summer?

When that glorious sunshine arrives, your bedroom will soon become stuffy and uncomfortable to sleep in at night.

That is why we would always advise replacing your bedding as the seasons change, as this will greatly enhance your quality of sleep.

So, which duvet cover material is best for summer?

Here are a few suggestions:

Cotton

Cotton tops our list as the best duvet material for the summer months. The fabric is soft, absorbent, and naturally breathable. It wicks moisture away from the body, and doesn’t show perspiration like synthetic fabrics do, allowing you to stay cool and dry!

Another terrific quality about cotton is its non-allergenic properties: the fabric does not cause skin allergies, which is why it is used to make bandages and gauze. This makes cotton a perfect bedding choice for people with allergies, eczema, asthma, and children.

Linen

Linen is an excellent material for summer bedding because it is moisture-wicking and highly breathable. This is because the flax plant has natural properties which allow air to flow easily between the fibres, so air and water can circulate easily.

What’s more, linen naturally regulates temperature, so it will adjust to the hot weather and keep you cool as you sleep.

Linen Bedding

Bamboo

Another cooling duvet cover material is bamboo. Bamboo bedding is derived from bamboo fibres, which do not require irrigation, pesticides or fertilisers to grow– this makes bamboo bedding an eco-conscious choice!

What makes bamboo ideal for a sweltering summer season is its anti-bacterial, moisture-wicking and thermo-regulating properties, which will cool you down at night.

Silk

Silk duvet covers are another great choice for the warmer months.

The fabric doesn’t absorb heat, and it releases sweat, instead of absorbing it, as other materials do. If the silk is made with enough air pockets, then this will wick moisture and humidity away from the body, instead of trapping it inside the duvet. This means the silk fabric won’t stick to your skin and make you feel hot as you sleep at night.

Additionally, the floss of silk is about 1/10th the size of a human hair- this lack of size is one of the reasons for silk’s ability to breathe well.

How To Keep Cool This Summer

Are you still getting too hot at night, even though you have a low tog duvet? Here are some tips to help you cool down and save valuable hours of sleep!

  • Choose lightweight, breathable bedding materials and pyjamas, such as cotton and linen. These are naturally breathable, cooling, and moisture-wicking, making them a safe choice for people who sweat a lot at night.
  • Invest in a cooling mattress topper, to reduce the temperature of the surface of your bed.
  • Use one or more fans to circulate cold air into your bedroom.
  • Place a bowl of ice in front of a standing fan, to make the fan breeze even cooler.
  • If you have a ceiling fan in your bedroom, make sure it is turning in the correct direction, so you feel the gentle breeze.
  • Open your bedroom windows, if it is cold outside.
  • Drink plenty of water throughout the day, to stay hydrated and replace the electrolytes lost through sweating.
  • Try not to let pets sleep on your bed with you, because this can make you feel hotter at night.
  • Refrain from exercising just before bed, as you don’t want to fall asleep flushed and sweaty from the exercise.
  • Keep hot electronics (such as your hairdryer, hair straightener and laptop) out of your bed.
  • If the weather is really hot, close your bedroom curtains during the day, to keep the heat and sunlight out.
  • Take a cool shower before bed, to lower your body temperature.
  • Apply a cold compress to your skin to cool you down.
  • Avoid eating very spicy or heavy meals before bed, because the foods that require more effort to digest are thought to generate more body heat.
  • Eat cold meals during the day, rather than turning on the oven or hob.
  • Cut down on caffeine and alcohol, as these can trigger more sweating.
  • Don’t wear tight, restrictive clothing, with poor airflow.
  • Speak to your doctor if your night sweats are worsening, or not improving over time. There may be an underlying medical issue which needs addressing.
